Skins is a project that merges found and altered objects with soft sculptures and performances, exploring rituals for dismantling and reconstructing myself.
I immerse myself repeatedly in the object, sewing in it and with it. However, this is not ordinary sewing; sometimes it is nervous, tense, painful, and obsessive, and other times meticulous, careful, and calm. As I work on the object, I revisit its wounds and my own. We have changed, we have affected each other. Time has passed, and both matter and the body eventually reveal it.
In the work "Monsters," the dolls (Barbies) are subjected to a process of dismemberment and then reconstructed through the act of sewing. By wrapping them in fabric and placing each stitch directly on the surface of the object, I engulf them as they are transfigured. The dolls function as a kind of projection of the self, allowing me to examine, through the object, the hidden carnage in the psyche.
In the performance "Skins," the action is a rebirth ritual that involves remaining in a trance for several hours inside a tubular fabric. Meanwhile, bodily sounds of fluids are played to provoke a process of introspection through bodily movement and its interaction with the soft, warm material associated with the corporeal and vital. Within this intimate space of the fabric, I open and sew soft textures that are containers of liquids, which gradually color and moisten the fabric. This creates an environment that, while enveloping me, acts as a porous barrier and an extension of my own body, as well as opening a portal of emotions and sensations to reconstruct experiences.
